| In
1998, Malaysia¡¦s
exports increased by 29.8%. In value terms, exports
accelerated from RM 220.9 billion in 1997 to RM 296.8
billion in 1998. Imports increased by 3.3% from 220.9
billion in 1997 to RM 228.3 billion in 1998. During the
period from January to April this year, Malaysia¡¦s
exports have increased by 4.2%, i.e. from RM 91.6 billion
in the same period last year to RM 95.4 billion.
Meanwhile, during the same period of first four months
this year, imports declined by 7.1% from RM 79.1 billion
to RM 73.4 billion. Textile and apparel sector has been one of the main contributors to Malaysia¡¦s exports. In 1998 export of textiles and apparel recorded a substantial increase of 30.6% over that of 1997. The exports increased from RM 10.2 billion in 1997 to RM 13.3 billion in 1998, registering a share of 4.6% to Malaysia¡¦s total exports in 1998. Major export destinations for textiles and apparel were the United States, Hong Kong, United Kingdom, Germany and Japan. Textile and apparel sector has been identified as one of Malaysia¡¦s priority sectors toward globalization based on its features as an export driven sector. However, it is not easy for any sector to reach global standards, as it is required to face stiff competition from products of other countries. Globalization would mean that products will have to compete in open market without relying entirely on cost advantages. |
