Brief Introduction to the Current Malaysian Textile Industry
1. Total number of textile factories in Malaysia is approximately 1,500 factories categorised as follows:

2. Distribution by Region
There is a high concentretion of textile projects in the southern region namely Johor. Batu Pahat in Johor State is known as the textile city of Malaysia with 40% of the textile factories located there especially the wet processing plants. (15 of the 40 plants in located Batu Pahat.)

3. Total export value of the textile and clothing industry for the year 1998 amounted to RM13,464.5 million which is equivalent to 4.7% of the total export and is the third largest foreign exchange earner after electronic and palm oil industry.

6. Investment

Almost 90% of the FDI was concentrated in the spinning, weaving and finishing mills. FDI in other subsectors such as knitting and apparel are relatively low i.e 3.2% and 5.4% respectively.
In terms of FDI by countries, Taiwan, with its biggest investment from Hualon Corporation (M) Bhd. emerged as the most important source of FDI in the Malaysian textile and apparel industry. Other countries with substantial investment are Japan, Singapore and Hong Kong.
